NSGL Publication Codes
The following publication codes are used for cataloging
purposes by the NSGL. This code is located in the second part of the
NSGL document number. For searching purposes, this field must contain 2 letters (the software will not allow for searching single letters); therefore, in the case of single letter publication type codes, these must be doubled (see below) when conducting a search.
AA.......Promotional brochures
BB.......Books
BR.......Reprint or chapter from a book (not peer-reviewed; see RR for peer-reviewed chapter reprints)
CC.......Computer software (including manuals), CD-ROMs
DD.......Directories
EE.......Educational materials, including curriculum,
and career information
FF.......Video lists, radio scripts and descriptions of other non-print
media
GG.......General public and advisory reports, fact
sheets, and posters
HH.......Handbooks, manuals, guides/aids
II.......Internet resources, topical websites, (prior to 2008 used for online documents and indexes)
LL.......Bibliographies, publication lists, indexes
MM.......Maps, atlases, and charts (also use type
code CC for older map collections)
MR......Miscellaneous Reprints (not peer-reviewed; see RR for peer-reviewed reprints)
NN.......Newsletters
NR.......Reprint from a newsletter, magazine, or other periodical (not peer-reviewed; see RR for peer-reviewed reprints)
OO.......Complete issues of journals, periodicals, magazines; Miscellaneous reports, papers, special collections
PP......Patents
QQ.......Sea Grant programs' quarterly, annual, progress
reports; program guides; implementation, strategic planning reports
RR.......Reprints from peer-reviewed journals, books, proceedings and other documents
SS.......Surveys or evaluations
TT.......Technical reports
VV.......Videos/DVDs
WW.......Workshops, proceedings, symposia-- including
highlights/summaries of (please note: document number reflects the year the proceedings was held, which does not always coincide with the publication year)
WR.......Paper, abstract, or Power Point (not peer-reviewed; see RR for peer-reviewed papers) presented at a conference, symposia, workhop or other forum (see RR for peer-reviewed conference presentations)
XX.......Thesis/dissertation abstracts
